Sowing
Sow undercover from February to April, then harden off and transplant after the last frost and when they are at least 10cm tall.
Harvest
From late November, ideally after the first frost, which makes the spouts sweeter.
Protection
The top-heavy plants will need staking to keep them upright in the wind.
They also need fine mesh netting to protect against cabbage butterflies and pigeons.
A brassica collar around the base helps protect against cabbage root fly.
